Plant-plant interaction involves the interaction between the varieties that
constitute a mixture as well as the interaction between the variety mixture and
weedy plant species. This working group will mainly focus on two very basic
questions:
(i)What strategy should be employed to obtain the best combination of individual
varieties? (ii) Should superior performance in pure stand or complementarity
amongst the components of the mixture be the guiding principle? Based on
experience obtained with species mixtures, the potential for variety mixtures
will be exploited. If appropriate, particularly if genetic diversity in itself
is not sufficient to control the weed population, the utilization of cropping
practices and specific weed control measures will be investigated. Integration
of these measures should result in a complete weed management strategy that is
based on G(enotype) x E(nvironment) x M(anagement) interaction.
